How has dentistry changed in the last 10 years? Let’s count the ways!

Like so many industries, dentistry looks a little different than it did when we were kids. Sometimes it may feel overwhelming to keep up with the latest trends, tech advancements, and marketing techniques when your true focus is treating your patients. Luckily, Dr. Erin Fraundorf broke down 5 major tips for the modern dentist to know, follow, and implement.

Meet Dr. Erin Fraundorf

Dr. Fraundorf is an orthodontist in St. Louis and absolutely loves what she does. Her favorite part of practicing orthodontics is seeing the transformation of her patients from both the physical and emotional sides. Being able to witness firsthand how impactful a smile can be is what fuels her passion for her profession.

She is originally from Wisconsin and completed her undergraduate studies there. Dr. Fraundorf then moved to Louisville, Kentucky where she obtained her DMD Degree at University of Louisville School of Dentistry. Following, she completed her residency and obtained her Masters Degree of Science in Dentistry and Orthodontics in St. Louis and has been there ever since. Her ideal day starts with a Peloton ride and walk with her dog before she has a day full of patients and ends with hanging out with loved ones.

5 Tips for the Modern Dentist

Educate your patients with your platform and expertise.

Dr. Fraundorf spoke with us about how crucial the educational component of dentistry is in today’s world. With the ease of access to endless information, many patients do research online or via social media prior to seeking any form of dental or orthodontic treatment. It is difficult for consumers to sift through information and determine what is true, so this access can prove to be harmful to their oral health. Particularly with the emergence of DIY (do-it-yourself) companies and the extensive commercial campaigns that accompany them, the risk for patients to consume incorrect information is at its peak. She thinks that now more than ever, it is essential that qualified dental professionals and specialists to have a presence online so the proper information can reach potential patients and curious Googlers.

Share your life with your patients.

When Dr. Fraundorf first started her professional Instagram page, she assumed no one would care about her personal life so she focused on dental things only. She soon figured out that’s far from the truth! People were so curious about who she was and what her life was like both in and out of the white coat. Whether it be an Instagram story or silly TikTok, social media is a great tool to showcase your personality and what makes you unique. You can use social media to create relationships by sharing fun events and posts, participating in giveaways or collaborating with other social media individuals or groups. Dr. Fraundorf recently partnered with a few local businesses for a giveaway to promote shopping local and engage with her community. She also uses this platform as a method of communication with patients as she encourages them to send her Instagram DM’s on evenings and weekends with any questions or concerns they may have about their own treatment. If you can make yourself friendly, approachable and available via social media, you will surely attract patients and create a bond with them that many other offices may lack.

Invest in good photography.

Dr. Fraundorf says good photos are a must! From your social media to your website, a high quality photo can make all the difference. Having updated, professional photos on your social media as well as website should be a priority. With cell phone cameras being so high quality nowadays, the ease of taking good photos is at your fingertips!

Make your website an extension of you.

Patients should be able to get a glimpse of you and your practice on your website. Just how Dr. Fraundorf recommends sharing your personality on your social media profiles, do the same on your website. Don’t just share your resume and accomplishments, but share insights into your life and what type of person you are. Give prospective patients the inside scoop. Make your website a fun, esthetic and engaging location for patients. Your website is often the first thing prospective patients use to find a potential dental or orthodontic home. You want your website to be an extension of you and showcase how you are unique.

Everything is about the consumer!

Dr. Fraundorf thinks the main way dentistry has changed in the last 10 years is that it is more consumer-driven than ever before, especially in orthodontics. It has shifted greatly to being a direct-to-consumer business. As an orthodontist, many patients come through general dental referrals, but now many patients are finding her on Instagram or TikTok! Marketing yourself directly to potential patients is essential in this new era of dentistry.
